Description

Company logo for FusTek Aerospace, a third-party manufacturer of spacecraft, space station modules and related components in the Kerbal Space Program space simulator game.

As previously described here, FusTek was originally the brainchild of Alex "fusty" Sterling, a member of the KSP add-on authoring community - Alex's work included the ISS-inspired Karmony-series space station modules, the Munox 18-Kerbal orbital taxi and the Kappa 1-Kerbal escape pod. When Alex went on haitus, he gave me permission to take over the maintenance of his space station parts pack, which I expanded upon to create more module variants and supporting parts as part of my first foray into add-on authoring.

Fictional Company Profile*

Founded in KY 460 by engineer Fusty Kerman, FusTek Aviation started life as a subcontractor making fasteners and fittings for larger aircraft manufacturers, whilst also offering small fixed-wing aircraft for the civilian market. Amongst the latter was the FusTek Dragonfly, a low-speed observation aircraft popular with wildlife photographers, surveyors, scenic tour operators and law enforcement due to its high-visibility "bubble" cockpit, ultra-silent ducted fan engine and low cost compared with helicopters.

During the global three-way war on Kerbin (KY 463 ~ 497), the company contributed to the Confederate war effort by leasing two of its three manufacturing plants to the government for the production of
KF-47 Ravenspear Interceptors, as well as fabricating armor plating and aerodynamic machine gun cowlings for retrofitting on older combat aircraft. FusTek Dragonflies saw extensive use in the Confederate Air Force by Forward Air Controllers (FACs) for Close Air Support (CAS) missions, as well as subsequent Target Damage Assessment (TDA) observation flights.

By KY 498, FusTek had severely reduced its scope of operations as a consequence of the postwar glut on aircraft parts, as aerospace manufacturers struggled to wind down military aircraft production. The company survived by focusing on spare parts for various civilian aircraft whose original manufacturers had long since gone defunct, as well as opening up its premises to universities and institutions conducting aeronautical and materials research.

With the Kerbal Space Administration announcing the commencement of a project to construct a second-generation orbital space station in KY 508, FusTek's Karmony series modules were chosen as the primary pressurized crew compartments, due to their lightweight aluminium construction, modular internal layouts and innovative composite whipple shield hull panels. Cash flow concerns and the company's struggles to re-expand its manufacturing capabilities led to Honko Hegemony-based Sum Dum Heavy Industries to buy a controlling stake in FusTek Aviation later that year, and the company was rebranded to reflect its new, expanded market focus.

Today, FusTek Aerospace boasts 1500 employees, six factories and 28 national sales and support offices throughout Kerbin, including regional headquarters located in the capitals of major Kerbal Federation member states. Its global headquarters is located in Kerbin City, Confederate States, not far from its original premises where it was founded. The company is also due to resume full-scale continuous production of the FusTek Dragonfly in KY 510, to mark the aircraft's 50th anniversary.
